Elegant plinth blocks in high-quality Nordic cottage style, designed to complement door and window architraves (casings). The block is mounted at floor level, where the architrave meets the skirting board (baseboard). For a well-balanced and proportioned result, choose a size that corresponds to the width of the architrave and the height of the skirting board.
Plinth Blocks for a Clean and Traditional Transition
Plinth blocks – also referred to as base plinth blocks or door plinth blocks – are classic architectural details used where door architraves (casings) meet skirting boards (baseboards). They create a clear and well-defined termination at floor level, contributing to a balanced and harmonious interior.
Historic Function with Lasting Relevance
Historically, wooden floors were often scrubbed with large amounts of water, which could cause moisture damage to the end grain of door architraves. Instead of replacing the entire casing, the plinth block could be replaced when worn. While this practical function is less relevant today, the original form and proportions remain an important part of traditional interior detailing.
Choosing the Right Size
For a well-proportioned result, the plinth block should be slightly wider than the door architrave and at least as tall as the skirting board. This creates a visually stable transition between wall, trim, and floor.
Supplied Untreated
Our plinth blocks are made from solid, untreated Swedish pine and are intended to be painted to match surrounding skirting boards and door casings.
