What is a top rail?
A top rail is mounted above the balusters or pickets and serves as both a structural and visual finishing element. It ties the railing together and creates a clear, continuous line along the top.
Top rails as handrails
For staircases and decks, the top rail often functions as a handrail. A rounded or shaped profile makes it comfortable to grip while adding a refined, finished look to the railing.
Choosing the right profile
The design of the top rail has a strong impact on the overall appearance. A simpler profile creates a more restrained look, while a more detailed shape suits traditional settings or period-style buildings.
Combine with matching components
For a complete railing system, the top rail can be combined with balusters and pickets, wooden posts, and post caps. Together, they create a stable and well-balanced construction.

All our top rails are made from solid wood that is suitable for outdoor use. They are supplied untreated and can be painted, oiled, or stained depending on the desired finish.
